Banned Book Week

Every year in September, writers and libraries “celebrate” banned and challenged books.  As the American Library Association states, it ” promotes the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinions even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those viewpoints to all who wish to read them.

You have probably read many of the books on the list at http://www.ala.org/bbooks/top-100-bannedchallenged-books-2000-2009

What are some of those books?  Do you think people have the right to decide what you read?  If so, under what circumstances?

Should books be kept from the media center shelf?   Why or why not?

It should be noted that when books are selected for the media center great care is taken to make sure they have positive reviews and that they are age appropriate.  Not every book makes it to the shelves!

Welcome Back!!!

School has started again and that means the media center is open and ready for readers!

What did you read this summer?  Did you see any of the movies based on YA books or on comics?

What are you reading now?

Share your reading and movie choices with your classmates!
