One of the goals here at Sykesville Middle School is to encourage you to read books just for fun.  So how do you choose a book for pleasure reading?  Are there any tools or resources that help you find a book? How would you tell other students how to find a good book?  Please share your comments.

The Guidance Counselor! by lauren0026

A lot of people have some problems that are difficult to deal with. They can be any kinds of problems, friend problems, divorce problems, anger problems, or even if you just want someone to talk to, but no matter what the problem is, the guidance counselor is the one to see. I went to see our school guidance counselor for some friend problems that I was having. She talked to me a little bit about what the situation was. Then we did an exercise on her chalkboard. Then, she gave me some ideas about how I could solve my problem. When I went out of her office, I was much more confident than I was when I was going in.  I was able to deal with my problem with her help. Now, when I have even a little problem, I go to her so we can solve it before it can get any worse. We are lucky that we have a guidance counselor at our school to help with our problems, I don’t know what I would have done without her.

Staying Safe Online!

We overheard something in the media center today.  A student was telling another student how so many people knew the screename and password he/she used for email.  He/she gave this information to friends. If you have access to email NEVER EVER SHARE YOUR PASSWORD with anyone other than your parents.  Once you share the information– even with you BFF (Best friend forever) it is no longer safe.  You might as well invite the world to read and use your email account.  A password is for you only.  Friendships and BFF’s change frequently.  Do not share private and personal information. Why would you?  This is also true with the login and password you need to access the network at school.   And really, why would anyone need your log-on information or the ability to access your email?   Keep your information private! We welcome your comments on this topic!

Hopefully all Sykesville Students received word that we want you to read over the summer!  We have even provided a form for you to record information of four books you read (-there should be a link available soon if you misplaced your original form).

Turn in the completed form once we return to school in  the fall and you will be invited to a picnic with prizes! Really it is easy and there are a lot of great books out there!  Have fun and check the website and blog for updates all summer long!
